DERMAL FILLER

Dermal fillers are soft tissue fillers injected into the skin to improve fine lines, folds and age lines on the face, restoring a smoother appearance. They are also used to volumise areas such as the cheeks and lips. Most dermal fillers are temporary because they are eventually absorbed by the body, and some people may need more than one injection to achieve their desired wrinkle-smoothing effect. Successful results depend on the health of the skin, skill of the health care provider, and the type of filler used. Talk to your doctor to see if this treatment is suitable for you.

What safety information/side effects should you be aware of?

All medicines can have complications, so do not be alarmed by the following list of side effects as you may not experience any of them. However, you should inform your doctor if you experience injection-related bleeding or bruising, swelling or numbness, inflammation or infection. If you suffer from poor wound healing, delayed healing may occur. If you observe side effects at the treated area which last longer than one week, you should inform your practitioner who may then initiate a suitable treatment, if required.

ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT

Anti-wrinkle injections improve the appearance of expression lines resulting from high muscular activity. These may present as glabellar frown lines, lateral periorbital lines (crow’s feet) or horizontal forehead lines. The effects of this therapy are rapid and will be noticeable within 2–3 days following treatment, with maximum effect visible after approximately a month. Different anti-wrinkle treatments contain varying amounts of protein, and this may impact the build-up of resistance with long-term treatment. Talk to your doctor for more information, or to see if this treatment is suitable for you.

What safety information/side effects should you be aware of?

Some side effects can occur as a result of having treatment. Common side effects include headaches, nausea, tenderness, swelling, redness or bruising of the skin at the injection site, dry eye, heavy feeling of eyelid/eyebrow/forehead, facial/brow asymmetry, dropping eyelids/eyebrows. Do not be alarmed by the list of side effects. You may not experience any of them. These are usually short term in nature and not severe but discuss with your doctor if they concern you.
